How to Use Twitter to your SEO Benefit

Twitter is an online social networking tool in which users post 140 character updates of what is going on in their lives along with links to things they think are interesting, funny, or useful to their followers (“following” being essentially what “friending” is on other sites). People use twitter in many ways, some as a newsfeed by following prominent people or networks, some as a pseudo-chatroom by limiting their followers and whom they follow to close friends and family, and some as a microblog for updating people about the work they are doing and their personal lives.

Direct Messaging

Direct Messages are private tweets (to other twitter users / the general public) that are exchanged between two users that follow each other. You cannot direct message someone that does not follow you and vice versa. Direct messages are the only private way to converse on twitter. “DM’s” are basically like emails that are limited to 140 characters per exchange. They are unsearchable on twitter.

hashtags

Hashtags are a way to label tweets so that other users can see tweets on the same topic. Hashtags contain no spaces or punctuation and begin with a “#” symbol. Many times at events like conferences or concerts, the organizers will tell attendees to add a particular hash tag to their tweets to gather opinions about the event and unite people at the same event.

Methods of using Twitter to your SEO Benefit
  • Keyword searches are still important as it will increase the amount of traffic to your site. Twitter users use language they are used to, therefore of a conversational manner.
  • Ensure to use keywords that relate to the twitter users.
  • Try using Google keyword tools or Keyword Discovery to help you select keywords to be used on Twitter.
  • Twitter is an easy marketing tool for your business; this network enables you to research your target market.
  • Brand your business on your Twitter profile. Branding is very important in SEO and social media.
  • Brand presence plays a crucial role on Twitter as traffic may overlook your businesses ad (blog).
  • Set up more than one Twitter account when targeting your audience.
  • Create a number of identities and use them to cater to different sectors of your audience.
  • Be specific with your messages, as with SEO, the more specific the better to attract traffic.
  • Your aim is to attract more followers on Twitter, thus resulting in more traffic to your site, the harder your message is to read, the lesser your chances you have in optimizing your site.
  • If your brand is tasteful, it will be easier to customize your Twitter profile. Your blog must be descriptive and informative.
  • Ensure to include your website’s address and your location within your Twitter blog.
  • Twitter also looks at factors such as the amount of time your account has existed.
  • Twitter like Google, needs to have trust in you in order to boost your Twitter search results.
  • Twitter SEO depends on the amount of followers you have, you need to build strong relationships with the followers you have and make connections with other people that may become followers.
  • The easiest way in obtaining new followers is to offer promotions or special offers.
  • Ensure to keep in touch with your followers or they may lose interest in your blogs if you do not interact with them and keep them updated.
  • Use relevant links and keyword searches as you only have 140 characters in which to get your message across to your audience.
  • Create conversations or debates relating to your product or service.
  • Provide advice or answer questions as frequently as possible.
  • Start a viral marketing campaign on Twitter; maximize your number of “re-tweets” on your content.
  • This campaign is successful especially if people are talking about you on Twitter.
  • Additional links and multimedia material can work to your advantage, this will snowball traffic to your site and Twitter blogs.
  • This will aid in establishing your brand image and develop new relationships with tweeters.
  • Twitter SEO is a lot like advertising with e-mails as in both cases you need to offer tweeters high-quality content to keep their attention.
  • Ensure your username is relevant and short; this also is a factor for SEO.
  • Twitter can have a positive impact on your websites rankings on Alexa.com; this then sends users to your website.

Earned Links vs Paid for Links

Earned Links and Paid for Links are two different types of links available for online marketers. The acquisition of links is currently under scrutiny as to which links are better to use. The following takes a look at Earned links versus Paid for Links.

The Difference between Earned Links and Paid for Links

Paid for links are links that are paid for by webmasters but do not include directories or other paid for conventional online marketing such as banner ads and PPC campaigns. Search engines, such as Google in particular tend not to favour paid for links, and may even penalize sites that purchase these types of links. Earned links are favoured by search engines as they are seen as more organic than those of bought links and much more credible. Earned links are also harder to obtain.

Bought Links
  • Google among other search engines use links to determine a website’s reputation.
  • Your website is rated according to the search results that have been analyzed in terms of sites that link to these links.
  • Webmasters buy and sell links in the attempt to pass Google’s page rank. However, they do this without thinking of the quality of the links provided on their sites.
  • Many paid for links could lead a website to getting penalized in some way or another.
  • Avoid paid for links on your site, especially if you are trying to up your ranks on Google.
  • If you do use paid for links for your site, ensure that they are for advertising and not used for trying to increase your site’s rankings.
  • However paid for links are important if they are good links. Quality is more important than quantity.
  • These links do give you the opportunity of gaining credit for your website yet only if they are quality links.
  • Credibility can be done if you buy channel sponsorship. This can be found on product or service specific websites.
  • These websites are highly ranked on Google; by placing your link on these sites you will be able to obtain more traffic.
  • Text link brokers work by providing websites that enable you to rent text link time; this is to get your site an increase on Google’s pagerank.
  • This is not a permanent placing, it is a monthly service.
  • Free based directories are a better option in terms of investment.
Earned Links
  • Earned links are regarded as more reputable links than those of paid for links.
  • These links are placed onto websites by the web owner’s own accord.
  • Your websites credibility must be of some importance if your site obtains earned links.
  • Search engines place certain amount of importance or value on your link; this does depend on where the link is placed however.
  • The earned links on your site will accumulate over time with little effort made from the webmasters side.
  • The links that are placed on your website should be from websites similar to your site in terms of industry, service and/or product.
  • These links must also contain relevant keywords in order to get higher ranking positions for your site.

6 SEO strategies to implement in 2015

1. Create and optimize for mobile traffic

Back in 2012 ComScore predicted that mobile traffic would exceed desktop traffic in 2014, and they were correct. Google has always said that it feels responsive websites provide the best user experience, and recently starting including a “mobile-friendly” notation next to websites in mobile search results that are indeed mobile friendly.

You can see if your website passes Google’s mobile-friendly test by clicking here. Bing has also stated it prefers a single responsive URL.

2. Optimizing for Bing, Yahoo and DuckDuckGo

Could 2015 be the year that some other search engines begin to take more market share? It seems like this is the million-dollar question every year, but some recent developments suggest that it could be possible.

Firefox kicked Google to the curb and Yahoo will now be the default search engine for the browser. Google’s deal is also up with Safari in 2015, and reports have both Bing and Yahoo trying to secure that spot. The option to switch default browsers in iOS 8 and OS X from Google to DuckDuckGo also exists.

With options other than Google becoming more popular and accepted it will make it important to have visibility across these search engines in addition to just Google.

3. Switch your focus from keyword rankings to ROI metrics

If you or your SEO company is still putting an emphasis on keyword rankings and determining the success of the campaign based on keyword positions, then it is time for a major wake up call. Ranking reports can be made to look pretty and some SEO companies will even target useless keywords just to say, “Hey look -- you are ranking number one!”

If you are a business owner spending money every month on SEO, what would you rather hear from your SEO agency?
  • “Congratulations, you are ranking number one for ‘buy blue widgets online’ but we aren’t sure what that translates into dollar wise.”
  • “The infographic that we published last month resulted in earning 67 links and it was also responsible for 45 conversions and $22,480 in revenue.”
Do you want a fancy PDF ranking report or do you want to know what your return on investment was?

4. More focused social-media approach

Social media was once just a platform to share content, so businesses would sign up for every social platform under the sun and blast their content everywhere. Social media is now a marketing channel as well as a customer-service channel. Your social audience expects your brand to engage with them on a more personal level.

It is more effective to focus on two or three social-media platforms and be very active and accommodating. This not only helps you generate more leads, sales and revenue, but it also helps to build a very loyal following that will share your content. This can introduce new people to your brand and even present opportunities to earn links.

5. Earning links rather than building links

Through all of the updates and algorithm changes over the years one thing remains the same: inbound links are the most influential signal of trust and authority. This isn’t going to change -- not in 2015 or anytime soon.
The days of building links on irrelevant blogs and chasing large quantities of links to game the search results are over. Earning a single link on a high-quality relevant website is valuable for multiple reasons including SEO, attracting referral traffic, leads, sales and branding exposure.

6. Targeting more precise keywords and search phrases

The days of targeting broad keywords are coming to an end. While they tend to have a huge search volume, they don’t attract highly targeted traffic and they are expensive to rank. Targeting long-tail search queries not only attracts qualified “buyer” traffic, but these terms will typically have much less competition. Keyword research along with understanding the shopping and purchase patterns of the target consumer can help to identify search terms and phrases to go after.

How To Build Backlinks

Backlinks are an important part of generating traffic to a site and increasing SEO. The following takes a look at how to build backlinks.

What are Backlinks?

Backlinks are referred to as links that link back to a website. Backlinks are links that point to your site from another site. They are also known as:
  • Inbound links
  • Incoming links
  • Inlinks
  • Inward links
Backlinks and SEO

Backlinks are important when adapting or designing a site for SEO. While SEO content and design help search engine “spiders”” to “crawl” through your site, backlinks make it easier for “crawling” to take place. Backlinks help to optimise search engine rankings of a site. This is because they create strong webs for “spiders” to “crawl” through.

Building Backlinks

Just as SEO takes time, backlinks are time consuming, but, it is a great way to optimise your site. Take the time to learn about backlinks and their importance for SEO.

Good and Bad Backlinks

It is important to get backlinks from reputable and relevant websites. If you have backlinks from questionable or irrelevant sites you put your website at risk. Either it will lose credibility or will look like spam. As a result your site will not be indexed or ranked by search engines. Bear in mind that some popular search engines rank a site according to the quality of site that links to it.

Quality Backlinks

In order to have quality backlinks you should:
  • Have limited links on each page
  • Use relevant links
Link within body text

How to Build Backlinks

When building backlinks it is important to know that quality linking is determined by:
  1. Link relevance
  2. The amount of links, as too many links can hinder SEO success
There are various ways to build backlinks, such as:
  • Natural links
  • Blogs
  • Forums
  • Social bookmarking
  • Directories
  • Articles
  • Press releases and announcements

Natural Links

If your site has good quality content, with relevant keywords and keyword phrases, other sites with a similar genre will link to your content. These are referred to as natural links. While this can generate traffic to your site, it is a good idea to build other backlinks.

Blogs

  1. Use relevant blogs to provide information about your site.
  2. Set up a relevant blog to provide website information.
  3. The blog must relate to the content and purpose of your site.
  4. Write relevant information that is different to the information on your site.
  5. Place the link within the text where suitable.
  6. Link from the blog to your website.
  7. If you own the blog do not link from your site to the blog.
  8. If the blog has a “no-follow” tag it may compromise the value of your SEO.

Forums

Join forums that are relevant to the content and style of your website.
  1. Discuss relevant topics on the forum.
  2. Include your website address in your profile.
  3. Your peers in the forum can click on your profile information and link to your site.
  4. Take note that some forum comments can be deleted or edited by the forum administrator. If this is the case it is not the best forum to create a backlink.
  5. If the forum has a “no-follow” tag on the comment it may compromise the value of your SEO.

Social Bookmarking

  1. Create valuable content on your website, which can be tagged as “helpful” by website users.
  2. Sites, such as Digg, allow users to discuss content that was submitted by another user.
  3. This allows other users to link back to your website to view the content.
Directories
  1. Submit your site to relevant directories.
  2. This will allow users to link to your site, which relates to their interests or needs.
  3. It can be time consuming, but, it provides a good place to build backlinks.
  4. Make sure that you submit your website to relevant directories.
  5. Submit your website to credible directories.
Articles
  1. You can submit your articles to other websites.
  2. Within the text you can add a relevant link to an article on your own website.
  3. This will increase traffic flow to your website.
  4. Make sure that the content on your website is different to the articles that you submit to other websites.
  5. Duplicating content can hinder the SEO of your website.

Press Releases and Announcements

When possible submit a press release or new announcement about your website.
  1. Submit quality content to sites that allow you to include news about your site.
  2. Only use credible sites when submitting a press release or announcement.
  3. Do not submit a press release or announcement if there are no new developments.
Things to Avoid
Some things to avoid when building backlinks include:
  • Exchanging links with another website
  • Generating links from link farms
  • Submitting your site or content to suspicious sites
  • Generating too many backlinks at once

Penalisation

A site may be penalised by a search engine if you:
  • Use dishonest ways to build backlinks
  • Duplicate content from your website
  • Use unethical SEO practices

Updating Backlinks

It is important to update your backlinks, as some sites may be disconnected. Therefore backlinks to your site may decease. By updating backlinks your site constantly generates traffic from other websites.

SEO Tips for Facebook Fan Pages

SEO is important for your fan page even though this is not a website
Even though your Facebook business page is not a website per se, it can be reached via search engines like Google. And that means that search engine optimization (SEO) of your page is just as important for your business website. No matter how good your products or services are, if no one can find you, you will not get customers.
Basic Tips:
1.  Facebook Page URL – Selecting your Facebook Page URL (e.g, www.facebook.com/pagemodo) directly ties into your search engine ranking. If you haven’t started a Facebook Fan Page or gotten a vanity URL, choose the name of your page carefully. When selecting a page name you have two options:
1.      Your Brand Name – If you have a recognizable brand name, use that to keep your branding consistent.
2.      Service Description – If you have a brand new business that new visitors will only find when searching on the web, consider utilizing rich keywords as part of your page URL. For example, if you own Betty’s Yummy Bakery that specializes in vegan cupcakes in Omaha, Nebraska. You might want to consider a Facebook URL such as http://www.facebook.com/omahavegancupcakes
2. About tab – Don’t ignore the “About” description tab of your page. Remember to utilize it to the fullest by posting a detailed, keyword rich description of your business. Search engines utilize this page as part of your Meta description when pulling search results. To edit this section, go to Edit Page option (top right-hand corner of your Facebook Fan page, when you are logged in as Admin on your Facebook page), click Basic Information.

3.  Page Title – Keep your page title consistent and short. Even though Facebook doesn’t limit the length of your page title, try to stick to 70 characters
4. Once you put all this information, here’s how your Facebook Page information breaks down:

BONUS TIPS
1. Fresh content is the Key – Regularly updating your Fan Page status with topics relevant to your business will provide search engines new “food” to crawl and index your page under.  This content will also keep your fans engaged and can increase repeat visitors/buyers.
2. New Post = New Page – When posting updates, try to put the most important keywords first as search engines utilize the first 18 characters to create titles for that individual post.
3. Link Building – By now you might have heard that posting links to your website or your blog on Facebook is a great way to build high quality inbound link for your website. However, did you know that posting links on your page can also improve its chances of showing up in search engine results? Thus, don’t be afraid to post links on your page to other pages in addition to your own website content. Just make sure before posting that these links go to reputable sources.

SEO versus SEM

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a process in which a website is configured with keywords that correlate with your service or product presented on your website. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a marketing venture which works on advancing your website in terms of its appearance on search engine result pages (SERP’s). The following takes a look at the differences between (SEO) and (SEM).

 SEO and SEM

SEO is a means of marketing through various search engines. The SEO process involves different methods in order to optimize your website’s listings to get a higher page ranking on search engines. SEO increases profit margins of websites as it positions the sites in higher positions on the search engine results page. Optimizing your website snowballs more traffic and helps you in achieving your most advantageous business goals. SEM forms part of the same marketing scheme as to that of SEO. Therefore, SEM is the general process of combining the process of SEO as well as implementing various online marketing advertising strategies.

SEO Facts
  • SEO tactics enable you to have keyword rich web pages.
  • Through SEO your site will have the necessary keywords implemented.
  • The images and alt tags on your site will also be named through the SEO process.
  • Article submissions and blogs are also tweaked to aid in the optimization of your website.
  • Websites stand a better chance of not getting sandboxed by Google with the ethical, white hat SEO process.
  • SEO amplifies your online presence and promotes your businesses reputation in terms of the services or products you are offering.
  • Your website’s files will be smaller after SEO is completed, therefore resulting in less server requirements and expenses.
  • The smaller the website file, the sooner your site will be downloaded for visitors and possible customers to view what your business has to offer.
SEM Facts
  • SEM uses SEO, PPC, PFI, social network marketing, traditional online marketing, and article marketing tools to optimize your sites visibility on search engines.
  • SEM includes marketing activities such as online strategy management, reputation management, blogging, online target market assessments etc.
  • Paid inclusion is a process of paying search engines or directories to add your website to its database.
  • PPC allows you to decide on the means of payment, notably paying for each click made on your ad.
  • This form of SEM is done with immediate effect. Paid inclusion is often the only means of getting listed on the top of the search results pages instantaneously.
  • SEM also involves traditional forms of online advertising, such as banner adverts, mass email campaigns etc.
  • SEM provides a good return on your investment (ROI).
  • SEM also provides progress reports and performance surveillance.

Organic Traffic Versus Paid Traffic

When it comes to increasing traffic, it can either be a very challenging and time consuming task or it can be a very expensive one. I’m talking about Organic traffic which is gained through the search engines versus Paid traffic which is also gained through search engines but doesn’t require any touch of SEO, you have to pay an extreme amount for it. So which path should you take and which option should you take?

Let’s take a look at some of the different options and pros and cons of buying traffic or gaining traffic through the search engines.

 Organic Traffic

While this can take a long time, it can be beneficial in the long run if you have a blog or dynamic website because you’ll have return customers. It’s absolutely free, you don’t have to pay a single penny, except for the bandwidth if you have a high traffic website. This is one of the major pluses in my book.

Pay Per Click / Paid Traffic

Let’s take a look into paid traffic or more commonly what it’s known as “Pay Per Click”. When you purchase pay per click traffic, you might be costing yourself an arm and a leg or a business if you don’t do it correctly.
  • You have to pay money based on the individual keyword. You don’t just pay for traffic, you have to pay based on a specific keyword that you have specified.
  • You have to setup a daily or monthly budget or else you’ll end up going over that budget and this is what a lot of people don’t realize. They end up going WAY over their budget and bankrupting themselves.
  • Paid traffic usually comes from spam sites or comes from software that generates hits, usually you’re buying fake traffic when a private vendor sells it.

In order to use Google Webmaster Tools, you need to join it first. You can do it from here. After you join, you need to go through the verification process, so that Google knows you are the legit owner of the site you want to use Google Webmaster Tools on.

There are several ways to verify ownership. The first one is to download an HTML file and to upload it to the root directory of your site. Another one is to add an HTML tag into the head of your home page. If you are using the same Google account for Google Analytics, a third option to verify ownership is through Google Analytics. There are more ways to verify ownership but if you are interested in them, check the Google Webmaster Tools settings and you will see them.

Google Webmaster Tools to Use Daily

Once you have verified your ownership and have Google code in place on your site, you can now start enjoying the advantages of Google Webmaster Tools. When you log into your Google Webmaster Tools account, the first thing you see is the Dashboard:

From here you can access all the major sections - Search Queries, Links to Your Site, Crawl Errors, Keywords, and Sitemaps. Clicking on any of these will open the respective section.

Search Queries

The Search Queries section shows the keywords that led users to your site.

This long list shows which keywords users searched for when they came to your site. It is best if this list matches the keywords you are optimizing for but very frequently this list contains good keywords you were unaware of. In this case, pick these good keywords and start optimizing for them, too.

In the Search Queries section, you can also see the number of impressions and the number of clicks, which gives you an idea about the CTR for this keyword. All equal, a higher CTR means the keyword is relevant, so you might want to invest some more efforts into this keyword. However, if you notice that as a result of your efforts, the CTR goes down, it is best if you don't touch this keyword anymore.

Links

The second very useful section of Google Webmaster Tools is the Links to Your Site section.

Here you can see where your backlinks (internal and external) come from, as well as the pages they are linking to. As with other link checking tools, don't expect that every single link to your site is displayed but nevertheless this list of backlinks is useful to check from time to time.

One of the advanced uses of the Links section is to disavow links to your site you deem harmful. Links from bad sites can hurt your rankings.

Crawl Errors

The Crawl Errors section shows the errors Google bot encountered on your site. The data you get is similar to what you get when you use the Spider Simulator and it shows inaccessible pages, missing pages, server errors, and all sorts of problems that prevented Google from correctly crawling your site. You also get some other crawl stats (such as the number of pages crawled a day) that are useful to know.

Keywords

Similarly to the Search Queries section that also deals with keywords (but it is the ones users type to get to your site), the Keywords section also shows keywords. However, the difference is that here you see what keywords (and their significance) Google has found on your site. The two lists (of keywords users type and the keywords Google finds on your site) could be very different, which means you are not optimizing for what users are searching for.

The Keywords section also allows to see the theme of your site, which post Panda has become even more important.

Sitemaps

The last section you can access from the Dashboard is the Sitemaps section. Here you see the sitemaps of your site Google has found and the number of URLs in them. If the sitemap found by Google is different from what you expected it to be, you can submit a new sitemap for Google to use.

Robots.txt and Other Advanced Stuff

The sections described so far are the basic Google Webmaster Tools sections. There is also a lot of advanced stuff in each of them but we won't describe it into details. For instance, you can use your Google Webmaster Tools to submit a robots.txt file, or to set the preferred domain syntax (i.e. with or without www) to be displayed in search results. Google Webmaster Tools also allows to know if your site is infected with malware. If it is, you need to clean it first and then resubmit it for review.

Google Webmaster Tools is a really valuable instrument for SEO. It gives you at a glance data about all important SEO aspects of a site, such as keywords, links, crawl errors, etc. If you don't use it already, take the time and get familiar with it ‐ it will help you get better rankings for sure.

What is Robots.txt?

The robots exclusion protocol (REP), or robots.txt is a text file webmasters create to instruct robots (typically search engine robots) how to crawl and index pages on their website.

The Robots Exclusion Protocol (REP) is a group of web standards that regulate web robot behavior and search engine indexing. The REP consists of the following:
  • The original REP from 1994, extended 1997, defining crawler directives for robots.txt. Some search engines support extensions like URI patterns (wild cards).
  • Its extension from 1996 defining indexer directives (REP tags) for use in the robots meta element, also known as "robots meta tag." Meanwhile, search engines support additional REP tags with an X-Robots-Tag. Webmasters can apply REP tags in the HTTP header of non-HTML resources like PDF documents or images.
  • The Microformat rel-nofollow from 2005 defining how search engines should handle links where the A Element's REL attributes contains the value "nofollow."
Structure of a Robots.txt File
The structure of a robots.txt is pretty simple (and barely flexible) – it is an endless list of user agents and disallowed files and directories. Basically, the syntax is as follows:

User-agent:
Disallow:

User-agent” are search engines' crawlers and disallow: lists the files and directories to be excluded from indexing. In addition to “user-agent:” and “disallow:” entries, you can include comment lines – just put the # sign at the beginning of the line:

# All user agents are disallowed to see the /temp directory.

Block all web crawlers from all content
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

Block a specific web crawler from a specific folder
User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /no-google/

Block a specific web crawler from a specific web page
User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /no-google/blocked-page.html

Sitemap Parameter
User-agent: *
Disallow:
Sitemap: http://www.example.com/none-standard-location/sitemap.xml

Important Rules
  • In most cases, meta robots with parameters "noindex, follow" should be employed as a way to to restrict crawling or indexation.
  • It is important to note that malicious crawlers are likely to completely ignore robots.txt and as such, this protocol does not make a good security mechanism.
  • Only one "Disallow:" line is allowed for each URL.
  • Each subdomain on a root domain uses separate robots.txt files.
  • Google and Bing accept two specific regular expression characters for pattern exclusion (* and $).
  • The filename of robots.txt is case sensitive. Use "robots.txt", not "Robots.TXT."
  • Spacing is not an accepted way to separate query parameters. For example, "/category/ /product page" would not be honored by robots.txt.
Things you should avoid
If you don't format your robots.txt file properly, some or all files of your Web site might not get indexed by search engines. To avoid this, do the following:
  1. Don't use comments in the robots.txt file
Although comments are allowed in a robots.txt file, they might confuse some search engine spiders.

"Disallow: support # Don't index the support directory" might be misinterepreted as "Disallow: support#Don't index the support directory".

  2. Don't use white space at the beginning of a line. For example, don't write

    placeholder User-agent: *
    place Disallow: /support

    but

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /support

  3. Don't change the order of the commands. If your robots.txt file should work, don't mix it up. Don't write

    Disallow: /support
    User-agent: *

    but

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /support

  4. Don't use more than one directory in a Disallow line. Do not use the following

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /support /cgi-bin/ /images/

Search engine spiders cannot understand that format. The correct syntax for this is

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /support
    Disallow: /cgi-bin/
    Disallow: /images/

  5. Be sure to use the right case. The file names on your server are case sensitve. If the name of your directory is "Support", don't write "support" in the robots.txt file.

  6. Don't list all files. If you want a search engine spider to ignore all files in a special directory, you don't have to list all files. For example:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /support/orders.html
    Disallow: /support/technical.html
    Disallow: /support/helpdesk.html
    Disallow: /support/index.html

    You can replace this with

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /support

  7. There is no "Allow" command

Don't use an "Allow" command in your robots.txt file. Only mention files and directories that you don't want to be indexed. All other files will be indexed automatically if they are linked on your site.

What is Google’s Sandbox

The Google Sandbox Effect is a theory used to explain why newly-registered domains or domains with frequent ownership changes rank poorly in Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). In other words new websites are put into a “sandbox” or a holding area and have their search ratings on hold until they can prove worthy of ranking.

Once Google deems a website to be of quality and importance the website will be removed from the Sandbox and can potentially show up high in Google Search Engine Results Pages. Webmasters can do numerous things to improve their website with Google, but time really is the key in getting out of the Sandbox. Sandbox believers say it can take anywhere from 6 months to a year and sometimes longer before Google will promote a website out of the Sandbox.

Because Google does not acknowledge the Sandbox and it has not been clearly proven the Sandbox Effect is just a theory. Even though it is just a theory, the Sandbox is believed by the majority of webmasters. The Sandbox is believed to have come about in 2004 when changes to Google’s Algorithm made it so new websites were banned from the top of Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS).

It may seem that the Sandbox is unfair to newly launched websites, but Google created the Sandbox with good reasons. Google was trying to discourage spam sites from quickly reaching the top of Search Results, getting dropped off Google, creating a new site and repeatedly showing up high in Search Results. In the past, companies would put up a promotional website for a short period of time and once the promotion was over the website was gone. These promotional websites would still show up high in Google Search Engine Results even after they were removed, causing many broken links and unhappy Google searchers.

Even with the Sandbox Effect it is still possible for newly launched websites to make it to the top of Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). If Google deems a new website of being worthy it can be seen in Search Engine Results immediately, but it can still take up to 6 months for the website to rank to its fullest potential. There are many ways in which web designers use to avoid the Sandbox, some of which are discussed below. But because of its uncertainty, even if all algorithm variables are followed there is still no way to guarantee new websites from being put in the Sandbox.

How can you tell if you are in Google’s Sandbox?

Now that you know what the Sandbox is it is important to learn how to tell if a site is in the Sandbox. Before determining if a website has been put in the Sandbox you need to find out if the entire site was dropped from Google or if it has just been ranked down for certain keyword phrases.

Start by doing a search in Google for your site. To do this type: “site: www.yourdomain.com” in the Google Search bar (replace “yourdomain.com” with your site URL). If Google does not return any results than most likely your entire website has been dropped by Google. If Google shows your website in the results and your website recently dropped down in keyword rankings, than you are still indexed by Google and it is likely that you were placed in the Sandbox.

New websites start out on the bottom with a zero page rank but with time the site can start ranking up. Does your website have a pagerank but it is still not showing up in Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS)? If that is the case, your website is more than likely in the Sandbox. Often times a new website can have a pagerank after a short period of time, rank high in Google Search Results and then all of a sudden disappear from Google Search Results. When this happens it is likely that the site was put into Google’s Sandbox. Many people are left asking themselves why? There is no one answers as to why websites get put into the Sandbox, but below is a list of things thought to affect website’s placement with Google.

Minimizing Sandbox Damages

While Google sandbox is not something you can control, there are certain steps you can take in order to make the sandbox effect less destructive for your new site. As with many aspects of SEO, there are ethical and unethical tips and tricks and unethical tricks can get you additional penalties or a complete ban from Google, so think twice before resorting to them.

Before we delve into more detail about particular techniques to minimize sandbox damage, it is necessary to clarify the general rule: you cannot fight the sandbox. The only thing you can do is to adapt to it and patiently wait for time to pass. Any attempts to fool Google – starting from writing melodramatic letters to Google, to using “sandbox tools” to bypass the filter – can only make your situation worse. There are many initiatives you can take, while in the sandbox, for as example:

Actively gather content and good links – as time passes by, relevant and fresh content and good links will take you to the top. When getting links, have in mind that they need to be from trusted sources – like DMOZ, CNN, Jasmine directory (a directory with a high editorial discretion), Fortune 500 sites, or other reputable places. Also, links from .edu, .gov, and .mil domains might help because these domains are usually exempt from the sandbox filter. Don't get 500 links a month – this will kill your site! Instead, build links slowly and steadily.
·         Plan ahead– contrary to the general practice of launching a site when it is absolutely complete, launch a couple of pages, when you have them. This will start the clock and time will be running parallel to your site development efforts.
·         Buy old or expired domains – the sandbox effect is more serious for new sites on new domains, so if you buy old or expired domains and launch your new site there, you'll experience less problems.
·         Host on a well- established host – another solution is to host your new site on a subdomain of a well-established host (however, free hosts are generally not a good idea in terms of SEO ranking). The sandbox effect is not so severe for new subdomains (unless the domain itself is blacklisted). You can also host the main site on a subdomain and on a separate domain host just some contents, linked with the main site. You can also use redirects from the subdomained site to the new one, although the effect of this practice is also questionable because it can also be viewed as an attempt to fool Google.
·         Concentrate on less popular keywords – the fact that your site is sandboxed does not mean that it is not indexed by Google at all. On the contrary, you could be able to top the search results from the very beginning! Looking like a contradiction with the rest of the article? Not at all! You could top the results for less popular keywords – sure, it is better than nothing. And while you wait to get to the top for the most lucrative keywords, you can discover that even less popular keywords are enough to keep the ball rolling, so you may want to make some optimization for them.
·         Rely more on non-Google ways to increase traffic – it is often reminded that Google is not the only search engine or marketing tool out there. So if you plan your SEO efforts to include other search engines, which either have no sandbox at all or the period of stay there is relatively short, this will also minimize the damages of the sandbox effect.
